The Inncrowd Backpackers' Hostel - Review

Singapore has never been known as a backpackers' destination. Food and accommodations here are much more expensive compared to Thailand or Vietnam. But if you're in town and looking for a budget stay, all is not lost. There are several budget hostels downtown along the Dunlop Street stretch and one of the most popular ones is The Inncrowd Backpackers' Hostel.

The hostel is quite easy to find, about 15 minutes' walk from Bugis mrt station and just a few blocks away from Little India, a tourist attraction. There also many buses serving the area. For cheap local food, you can head over to the Tekka Food Mall (7 mins) where a local meal with drink can be had for under US$5. If you drop in without prior bookings and find the hostel full, you can try the others along the stretch.

Inncrowd has since grown to occupy two buildings. The main building is where the reception, pantry and chill-out area is located. It is usually more crowded here with guests coming in and leaving. If the main building is full, their staff will take you to their next building just a few minutes' walk around the corner. The second building is quieter but the shower rooms and WC cubicles are smaller. Overall, you get clean sheets and a cheap bed for the night, what more can one ask for? They have lockers for you to stash away your things. The worse thing that can happen is getting a noisy room mate - there are up to 8 double-decker beds in some of the rooms. So make sure you have your iPods with you.

The atmosphere at the hostel is friendly. You can laze around the chill-out area, make your own meals, watch TV or DVD, surf the internet (there are two PCs there but you can expect someone to be hogging them for sure), read a magazine or chat with hostel mates. Bring your own slippers (flip flops) as the ones they sell at the hostel are quite expensive.

For visitors from Malaysia driving in to Singapore, there is parking space along the street (see pix for rates).
